Greetings from Wadsworth, Ohio!
As many of you already know, a new law that went into effect on October 1st, prevents Ohioans from direct purchasing of out of state wines from many popular California, Oregon, Washington and other states wineries.
The state legislature slipped an amendment into a budget bill prohibiting wineries with production over 62,000 cases from shipping to Ohio residents. You can read more in an earlier Nick On Wine post.
Now an organization of over 300,000 wine consumers, Free the Grapes, is requesting wine lovers to join their mailing list and get involved in overturning the ban. You can access their web site at: www.freethegrapes.org. And Ohioans can go specifically to the pages for the Ohio wine laws by clicking here.
And the laws CAN be overturned. Just this past August, a Federal Judge, John Daniel Tinder, ruled that Indiana's restrictive laws did not give equal treatment to Indiana and out of state wineries as required by a 2005 Supreme Court decision. This is the very same reason that a Federal court in Ohio overturned the states shipping ban. Now without a second of discussion, we have this ILLEGAL legislation slipped into the state budget.
This WILL be overturned with the help of the wine consumers in Ohio. Let's join together and get it done!
